Farnborough hosts Airshow 2010

A lot of aviation suppliers have already made sure that the time window July 19 – 25, 2010 is clearly marked in their calendars. This is when they will be heading for Hampshire in the south of English to attend Farnborough International Airshow. At present, a total of 34 pavilions have been booked by exhibitors from 36 countries, including Morocco and the Portugal for the first time this year, along with 77 other new exhibitors.

As so often in recent years, there will be no lack of superlatives to be seen at the airfield of the former Royal Air Force base in Farnborough. The British organizers are certainly very confident of this, claiming that Farnborough will be the “premiere event” for the international aviation, aerospace and armaments industry.

Of course, talking yourself up is all part of the business, and even if there is some envy among the organizers of the ILA – which takes place six weeks earlier in Berlin – Farnborough really will be a must for the entire sector again in 2010.

This applies especially to the first five days, which are reserved for trade delegates. Naturally, the main purpose of all the activity on the tradition-steeped airfield in the UK is to do business. According to the companies’ themselves, Airbus placed 277 orders here in 2008, Boeing 141 and Suchoi 25 for the new Superjet. At present, a total of 134 pavilions have been booked by exhibitors from 36 countries, including Morocco and Portugal for the first time this year, along with 77 other new exhibitors.

The trade delegate days are theme and congress days: Monday focuses on aviation, Tuesday on the armaments industry, Wednesday on aerospace and Thursday on safety topics. According to the organizers, “networking” is the motto and principal overall focus of the trade fair. Friday is “Future’s Day” – after all, the sector wants to promote itself as an attractive employer and organize a job market for young professionals. The usual suspects will be presenting the state of the art in the exhibition halls. For example, Alenia will feature the C27J, Boeing the Dreamliner perhaps, Bombadier the Learjet 60 XR, while Sukhoi will showcase the Superjet 100 and Eurocopter such models as the EC645, the military version of the civilian EC 145.

The 2008 event attracted around 153,000 visitors and the same number are expected this year. After all, the program is highly appealing – for both visitors and exhibitors. The latter can be expected to make the most of the opportunities available, with such events as “Meet Your Buyer” and the “Space Zone”, where leading agencies will have the opportunity to present the full breadth and width of their space activities. – Robert Wouters -

Airspace “on fire” at the weekend
On the weekend of July 24/25 2010 the airspace over Farnborough will be come alive for the general public with some spectacular flight demonstrations. In addition to the Airbus A380 and the A400M, a number of other famous models are due to fly in, such as the Boeing F-18, the Lockheed F16 and C130J, some historical RAF machines and a Hawker Hurricane Mk1. There will be a “Battle of Britain Memorial Flight” and the RAF Red Arrows will perform their breathtaking aerobatic stunts with the equally renowned Blades. Flight demonstrations of civilian and military drones are also on the agenda.
