New materials such as carbon fiber reinforced plastic are becoming established in aircraft and engine construction, though metal alloys will continue to serve as the main materials for a long time to come. However, the development of materials is making increasing demands in terms of the capacities of machining equipment and processes. aerotec’s Nikolaus Fecht conducted an exclusive survey to find out just how the machine tool industry is facing up to these challenges.

Airtec 2010, the trade fair for suppliers to the aerospace industry takes place on November 2 to 4, 2010 at the Exhibition Center Frankfurt. The event is attracting a rising number of exhibitors matched by a strong presence of OEMs and system suppliers attending the B2B meetings. aerotec spoke with trade fair manager Diana Schnabel on the orientation and current focus points of the supplier trade fair.

RUAG: Engine manufacturing concept improved

The Swiss Company RUAG Aerospace invested in new Deckel Maho machining centres for combined milling and turning of the engine housing in one clamping position, thus realizing an essential part of its supply chain. The complete manufacturing process of the forward and aft fan case including assembly was relocated to Emmen, while the machining of the acoustic panels continued as before.

The systems at work in aviation also need to become more environmentally compatible. Farnborough hosts Airshow 2010

A lot of aviation suppliers have already made sure that the time window July 19 – 25, 2010 is clearly marked in their calendars. This is when they will be heading for Hampshire in the south of English to attend Farnborough International Airshow. “Towards a more intensive exchange“

The International Suppliers Center (ISC) has received the largest number of applications from the equipment and supply sector since it was set up. Intended to serve as a “fair within a fair“, this section of the display at the world’s oldest aerospace trade show will be attracting well over 60 per cent more exhibitors than in 2008. The ISC will be open during the three trade visitors’ days at the ILA, from 8 to 10 June.
RUAG Space tests robotic vehicle for Mars

RUAG Space is currently testing an autonomous robotic vehicle for Mars. In the year 2018, as part of its ExoMars scientific mission, the European Space Agency (ESA) plans to land an autonomous robot of this type on the Red Planet to search for signs of life there. [mehr...]

OHB-System awarded 10 million EUR contracts

OHB-System AG, a member of the European space and technology group OHB Technology AG has been awarded contracts under the E-SGA program (Europeanization of Satellite-Based Reconnaissance) providing for the operation of both the French ground station of the SAR-Lupe system and the German ground station of the Helios II system.
